What the word peptide means
A peptide has a short string of joined parts, much like a row of beads. Proteins are larger substances made from chains of those same parts. Insulin is one example of a peptide used as a medicine.
Calling a substance a peptide tells you about its makeup. The word alone cannot establish whether a product is safe or legal.
For FDA approval, the US Food and Drug Administration has reviewed the medicine for a specific use.
One medicine with FDA approval is semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy).
With compounding, a medicine is prepared to order instead of supplied as a finished drug made in a factory.
A medicine prepared to order is not FDA-approved, even if its maker is a licensed pharmacy.
